Hey, Senpai!

Tokyo Girls’ Style – Avex returns to idol pop! Initial Mixi stats as of 2/18/10

Posted on: February 18, 2010

S/mileage has got some serious (friendly) competition in the “new idols on the block” category this year. Avex is busily chronicling the birth of its new group, Tokyo Girls’ Style. Officially formed on January 1st, TGS features five girls between the ages of 11 and 13. Their profile says that they aim to reach Asia and the rest of the world!

The girls had their first live not too long ago, where they covered songs by past Avex groups such as SweetS and Folder5 as well as debuting their first original song, KIRARI. Avex is really making a push online with this group, with a Twitter, a YouTube channel, and blogs for both the girls and their mascot, Pippi

KIRARI is initially being made available via download only. Hopefully as fans in Japan show their support a CD will be announced so that those of us overseas can show them some love too! For now, we’ll need to be contented with this digest that shows them in all stages of preparation for their live, from rehearsals to dress rehearsal to footage from the show itself:

I’m interested. The song itself sounds different from the other groups out there right now, which is a challenge in itself – and the choreography is pretty impressive, especially considering it’s their first original routine. These girls sound great and they look like they’re having a lot of fun.

Interested in cheering them on? It’s easy to become a member of the girls’ official email magazine. Visit this link and enter your email address in the first box (the second one is to unsubscribe; the third is for phone email). You’ll need to verify your subscription by clicking the link in the first email you receive. It will take you to a webpage where you verify your gender (first option is “male”, second “female”), location (last option is “overseas”), and year of birth.

Also, English blog STYLE is keeping up with the girls every step of the way. With resources such as translated profiles, a photo archive, and video clips, it’s easy for any curious j-pop fan to check out the girls’ work and become hooked. In fact, I think that’s where I’m headed right now!

First, however, the group’s Mixi community is conveniently linked on the front page of their website, so here we go:
